My real name is Todd [Todd Allan Barry] but a lot of
people will know me as Nevil, I often joke to people and
tell them that 'only my parents and the authorities call me
Todd' which is quite true.
I am often asked how I got the nickname 'Nevil' and why I
don't spell it with double 'L' and 'E' at the end. The
reason for the spelling is simple, it's not my real name and
nEvil is easily spelt to someone as 'Evil with an N'. But
the more interesting part is why they call me Nevil in the
first place...
We go back quite some time to when the First Fleet
[convicts] came to Australia and settled. This is also the
beginning of my ancestry in Australia. Mary Wade, a convict
on the First Fleet is where my family tree begins. While
serving her sentence she met and fell in love with an
Aboriginal man to whom she had children, over the years the
gene's were passed down the family tree until the day I was
born.
A medical with a blood test would confirm that I carried
a gene that only those with Aboriginal descendents have.
After completing training to work as a driver/guide for Oz
Experience [Backpacker Bus Hop on Hop off Tours] I was out
drinking with some mates from the training, during that time
I brought the story up of my ancestry, due to a lack of
inspiration for a road name [nickname for tour drivers] the
boys started calling me Nevil, I asked why and they
explained that it was because I was part [1/16th] Aboriginal
that they would name me after 'Nevil' a concrete Aboriginal
statue in the TV series 'Kingswood Country'. and that is how
I became Nevil.
